Kedah government will not tolerate corruption: Mukhriz

JERLUN (Aug 17, 2013): The Kedah government will not tolerate any form of bribery or corruption and will ensure that the interests of the people always come first.

Menteri Besar Datuk Mukhriz Tun Dr Mahathir said that he had already made his stand clear on the issue of corruption.

“As I had stated earlier, my family members are not allowed to be involved in applying for tender of projects in Kedah.

“By making myself as the model, I hope that corruption can be curbed,” he told reporters after attending the Aidilfitri celebration of Ayer Hitam constituency in Padang Sera, here today.

Mukhriz warned that firm action would be taken against state government officials if they were found to be involved in corruption.

“This applies to the State Exco members who have decision making responsibilities. They must put the people's interest first in every decision.”

In an interview to mark his 100 days as Kedah Menteri Besar, Mukhriz said he would not give projects in the state to members of his family to avoid conflict of interest.

The Ayer Hitam state assemblyman said the Kedah government would apply for allocation from the federal government for flood mitigation projects and to clean-up the rivers.

He said a large allocation is needed to clean-up and beautify riverine areas which have become polluted because of excessive logging.

“The river beautification project will span ten years. If successful, it will help to attract more tourists to Kedah and Alor Setar City,” he added. – Bernama
